The City Art Gallery in Częstochowa
The City Art Gallery in Częstochowa with its location in the city centre is one of the biggest galleries in Poland. There are four exhibition rooms on the total area of 950 square meters. The City Art Gallery constitutes a place where everyone can experience contemporary art. It is a place devoted for individual careful thoughts and emotions. We exhibit several forms of art: paining, sculpture, graphic, photography and ceramics. The City Art Gallery has offered over 800 exhibitions during nearly 40 years of its existence. Some of them such as the individual famous artists’ exhibition or problem exhibitions: Can paining save us?, Polish surrealism, Thoughts about death, Time in photography- time of photography, Life of animals, Dionysus - have become prestigious.
Among the main activities of the City Art Gallery we can list: annual art exhibitions- “Jurassic Autumn” (as a result of artistic plain air that gathered artists from Poland and abroad), the City Plain Air, Triennials– exhibitions taking place every three years, e.g. Sacrum Triennial of Art, Triennial of Young Artists’ Paining-Marian Michalik’s appeal;individual and anniversary exhibitions of works by the artists from Częstochowa. The Sacrum Triennial of Art constitutes the most vital one. It exhibits works of multi-plots, the artistic aim of which is related to impression, experience or concerns sacrum in the life of a contemporary human. The schedule of Triennial was broadened and it now constitutes the festival of art related to the experience of sacrum. Apart from exhibitions we also offer theatre performances, happenings, film reviews and musical programmes. The impression is that the events ‘go out’ directly to the audience. Each edition of Triennial is equipped with its own motto, the leading idea. We do not consider this motto to be a strictly defined determinant; it is rather a question about the most basic forms of experience. One can make attempts to answer the question by means of each of the exhibited works representing various fields of art. So far the pursuit for a common spiritual space has been focused around three mottos: The Man-Belief -Art, Museum of Imagination, Towards the civilization of life, Art in the face of evil, Home – the Way of Being.
The special space in the City Art Gallery in Częstochowa - very impressive - is called Museum. There is presented the exhibition called “The Second Museum of Beksiński” - 30 pictures and 30 drawings of this one of the greatest polish artist the turn of the 20th century.
Visiting the Gallery is like going on a trip to some new worlds- the world of artist’s imagination, the world of colours and forms, the world of unexpected associations. The City Art Gallery is really worth visiting.
