Najnowszy cykl Jacka Waltosia – malarza, rysownika, rzeźbiarza, grafika – zatytułowany „Mrze”, jest głównym wątkiem wystawy prezentowanej w MGS. Ekspozycję budują jednak nie tylko dzieła z tej serii, tworzone przez Jacka Waltosia w ostatnich latach, ale również powstające od 1963 prace, w których Artysta ucieleśnia swoją fascynację krajobrazami „prowadzącymi do morza”. Są to cykle „Kaszuby”, „Ku morzu” „W morze”, „Przy morzu” „Kręgi”, „Młyny”. Wszystkie te dzieła, jak zawsze u Waltosia, charakteryzuje wielowymiarowość, od rozważań formalnych, poprzez urzeczenie pejzażem, aż po sięgnięcie do tygla materii mitycznej. Świadczy o tym chociażby obrazowe połączenie morskich fal ze znakiem nieskończoności odsłaniające wieloznaczność morza – fundamentalne połączenia życia i śmierci, ładu i chaosu, początku i końca, łagodności i surowości.
Jacek Waltoś urodził się w 1938 roku w Chorzowie. Studiował na Wydziale Malarstwa Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie w pracowni prof. Emila Krchy, dyplom uzyskał w 1963 roku. Współzałożyciel – wraz z Maciejem Bieniaszem, Zbylutem Grzywaczem, Barbarą Skąpską i Leszkiem Sobockim – grupy WPROST, działającej w latach 1966-1986. Brał udział we wszystkich wystawach grupy. Jej członkowie w 1967 roku otrzymali Nagrodę Krytyki Artystycznej im. C. K. Norwida, a w 1984 roku Nagrodę Archidiecezji Warszawskiej. Indywidualnie Jacek Waltoś jest laureatem m.in.: Nagrody Alby Romer-Taylora (1994), Nagrody Kultury Niezależnej (1986) i Nagrody im. Jana Cybisa (2002). Współorganizator wystawy „Romantyzm i romantyczność w sztuce polskiej XIX i XX wieku” (1975). W latach 80. uczestniczył w prezentacjach „sztuki niezależnej”. Jest autorem esejów i artykułów o sztuce, współautorem książki „100 najsłynniejszych obrazów”. Pracował w Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Poznaniu i Krakowie. W 2011 roku zakończył wieloletnią pracę dydaktyczną.
Prace Jacka Waltosia znajdują się m.in. w zbiorach wszystkich Muzeów Narodowych w Polsce, w Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej w Radomiu, Muzeum Górnośląskim w Bytomiu, Muzeum Śląskim w Katowicach, ale także w wielu innych kolekcjach publicznych i prywatnych. Najważniejsze cykle prac, prezentowane na wystawach indywidualnych od 1963 roku to:
„Przemiany – Androgyne”; „Kręgi”; „Fedra wg Jeana Racine’a”; „Pieta w trójnasób”; „Pomiędzy nami – kres”; „Eros -Agape”; „Płaszcz Miłosiernego Samarytanina”; „Dr Freud bada duszę ludzką”; „Ludzie Czechowa”; „Ofiarowanie I. przez A.”; „Samuel i głos/Wołanie”; „Centaur”; „Współczułość”; „Empedokles u krateru Etny”; „Mrze”.

The latest series by Jacek Waltoś, a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, entitled ∞sea∞ is the main topic of the exhibition curated in the City Art Gallery in Częstochowa. Interestingly, the display features the works included in the aforementioned series as well as some of the artist’s older ones, created in 1963, and embodying his fascination with “leading towards the sea” landscape, for example “Kashubia” [“Kaszuby”], “Towards the Sea” [“Ku morzu”], “Into the Sea” [“W morze”], “By the Sea” [“Przy morzu”], “The Circles” [“Kręgi”], and “The Mills” [“Młyny”]. All these works bear the artist’s trademark, namely, they are characterised by multidimensionality, from formal reflections, through the captivating landscape, to touching the topic of the mythical world. It is reflected, for example, in the figurative pairing of the sea waves with the infinity sign, which reveals the ambiguity of the sea – the fundamental connections between life and death, order and chaos, beginning and end, gentleness and harshness.
Jacek Waltoś was born in 1938 in Chorzów. In 1963, he graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, having studied under the tutelage of Prof. Emil Krcha. Along with Maciej Bieniasz, Zbylut Grzywacz, Barbara Skąpska and Leszek Sobocki, he was a co-founder of the WPROST group which operated between 1966 and 1986. He participated in all exhibitions curated by the group. It is worth mentioning that its members received the C. K. Norwid Art Criticism Award in 1967 and the Warsaw Archdiocese Award in 1984. Additionally, Jacek Waltoś is the holder of, among others: Alba Romer-Taylor Award (1994), The Independent Culture Award [Nagroda Kultury Niezależnej] (1986) and Jan Cybis Award (2002). He is also a co-organiser of the exhibition entitled „Romanticism and Romance in Polish art of the 19th and 20th century” [„Romantyzm i romantyczność w sztuce polskiej XIX i XX wieku”] (1975), as well as the author of essays and articles concerning art and a co-author of the book „100 most famous paintings” [„100 najsłynniejszych obrazów”]. In the 1980s, he participated in presentations of the Polish independent art movement.
He worked at the Academies of Fine Arts in Poznań and Kraków, and only in 2011 did he end his teaching career.
The works of Jacek Waltoś can be found in all National Museums in Poland, in the Museum of Art in Łódź, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Radom, the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, the Silesian Museum in Katowice, and many other public and private collections.
