Zdzisław Beksiński was one of the greatest polish artist the turn of the 20th century - painter, photographer and sculptor. Known for his surrealist-expressionist works. He was born in 1929 in Sanok, died (was murdered) on the 22nd of February 2005 in Warsaw. After finishing his studies at the Kraków University of Technology Beksiński returned to his hometown of Sanok. Already in the first half of the fifties he created mature photographical works, later he devoted himself to painting. Beksiński executed his paintings and drawings either in what he called a '„Baroque” or a „Gothic” manner. The first style is dominated by representation, with the best-known examples coming from his 'fantastic realism' period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic , nightmarish environment. The second style is more abstract, being dominated by form, and is typified by Beksiński's later paintings.
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Dmochowski from Paris the City Art Gallery in Częstochowa has gathered in deposit a great collection of paintings and the drawings of Zdzisław Beksiński. The exhibition called Museum of Zdzisław Beksiński had been presented from February 2006 to February 2016. The new collection as a new exhibition called “The Second Museum of Beksiński” has been opened from 25 May 2016 as permanent exhibition. For those who want to get know other works of this artist we have prepared multimedia stands where it will be possible to hear what the painter says about art, follow the stages of the creation of a picture, look through his artistic output, analyze the created the created work.
A few words about the selection of works exhibited in City Art Gallery in Częstochowa… It covers 30 pictures and 30 of drawings. The idea was to exhibit the works that were most characteristic for each epoch Beksiński’s artistic activity. The drawings are made with the use of charcoal, a feather, a pen or blacklead. They are characterised by the precision of performance and care of details. Beksiński drew the figures with all the details, not necessarily anatomically true, but very convincingly.
